  • Description

Austrian Jochen Rindt driving a Lotus 72 Ford won the West German Formula One Grand Prix motorrace at Hockenheim on Sunday (2nd August) to take a commanding lead in the World Drivers' Championship.

Rindt's victory came after a nerve wracking duel with Belgium's Jackie Ickx in a Ferrari who took second place. In third place was New Zealander Denis Hulme driving a McLaren-Ford. The winning car average 199.4 kph (126.1 mph) for the 333.9 km (210.5 miles) race and gave Rindt a twenty point lead in the driver's championship.

Jack Brabham, who is now twenty points behind Rindt in the Championships with 25 points, dropped out of the race in the third lap with oil system troubles. New Zealand's Chris Amon and Clay Reggazoni of Switzerland, the only drivers to challenge Rindt and Ickx, were also forced to retire from the race. Britain's World Champion Jackie Stewart and Ex-Champion Graeme Hill were among other drivers to have mechanical troubles.

A crowd of 120,000 motor enthusiasts watched the race which treated them to more than one hour and a half of suspense.
