EX-MEMBERS OF THE NAZI "WAFFEN S.S." TOOK PART IN A REUNION PARADE AT RENDSBURG IN?

  • Description

EX-MEMBERS OF THE NAZI "WAFFEN S.S." TOOK PART IN A REUNION PARADE AT RENDSBURG IN SCHLESWIG HOLSTEIN YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). AMONG THEM WAS GEORG DIEDRICHS - A GERMAN POLITICIAN WHO WAS A SOLDIER IN THE 1939-45 WAR.

DURING THE RALLY, THE FORMER S.S. MEMBERS DEMANDED LEGAL AND MORAL EQUALITY WITH OTHER WAR VETERANS. A SPOKESMAN SAID: "THE FORMER SOLDIERS OF THE WAFFEN - S.S. CANNOT BE PLACED ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THE MURDERERS OF AUSCHWITZ." THE SPOKESMAN ADDED THAT THE ASSOCIATION OF EX-WAFFEN S.S. SOLDIERS CONDEMNED THE "INHUMANITIES" COMMITTED BY POLITICAL S.S. ORGANISATIONS.

THE RALLY WAS HELD IN RENDSBURG DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM VARIOUS QUARTERS. ON SATURDAY NEARLY A THOUSAND SURVIVORS OF NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS HELD A MEETING IN THE TOWN SQUARE TO PROTEST AGAINST THE PARADE. FROM BRITAIN A LETTER, SIGNED BY EARL BERTRAND RUSSELL, LORD BOYD ORR AND A NUMBER OF LABOUR M.P.'S, WAS SENT TO THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR, DR. ERHARD, PROTESTING AGAINST THE REUNION.

(THE S.S. - SCHUTZSTAFFEL - WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY A MILITARY BODYGUARD FOR THE NAZI PARTY, LATER PROVIDED GUARDS FOR CONCENTRATION CAMPS WHILE ITS MILITARY SECTION, THE WAFFEN S.S., WAS PROVIDING TROOPS FOR THE GERMAN FRONT LINE. AS THE S.S. AS A WHOLE WAS PROSCRIBED AS A NAZI ORGANISATION BY THE NUREMBURG WAR CRIMES TRIBUNAL, ITS MEMBERS - WHETHER THEY FOUGHT ON THE FRONT OR SERVED IN THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS - WERE DENIED THE PENSION RIGHTS ACCORDED TO FORMER MEMBERS OF NORMAL MILITARY FORCES. A BILL TO GIVE THEM THESE RIGHTS IS NOW UNDER DISCUSSION IN THE WEST GERMAN PARLIAMENT.)
