  • Description

A puff adder in captivity in Kenya's Nairobi National Museum has produced 134 young -- believed to be a record. The young were born alive -- unlike most species, which are hatched from laid eggs -- and fully poisonous from birth. Shortly before this film was shot, ten of the young were killed when rolled upon by their mother -- who was shortly afterwards removed for the protection of the survivors.

Puff adders normally give birth to about two dozen young in any one litter -- and although 60-70 in a litter have been recorded before, they were considered to be exceptional.
