IT'S PLANNED FOR THE CABORA BASSA GORGE IN MOZAMBIQUE, BUT BECAUSE THE DAM WOULD CEMENT TIES BETWEEN MOZAMBIQUE, RHODESIA AND SOUTH AFRICA, POLITICS HAVE COME INTO THE ISSUE.

IF THE PROPOSED DAM IS COMPLETED IT WILL PROVIDE RHODESIA WITH AN INVALUABLE OUTLET TO THE SEA AND SUPPLY CHEAP ELECTRICITY TO SOUTH AFRICA.

UNITED NATIONS SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA AND THREATS FROM THE MOZAMBIQUE LIBERATION FRONT HAVE LED TO THE WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PROJECT OF THE GIANT ELECTRICAL CONCERN, ASEA. YET OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES CONCERNED WITH THE CABORA BASSA PROJECT SEEMED LESS WORRIED.

WHEN COMPLETED THE DAM WILL DWARF BOTH THE ZAMBIAN-RHODESIAN KARIBA PROJECT AND EGYPT'S ASWAN DAM. TOTAL POWER OUTPUT WILL BE 4,000 MEGAWATTS OF POTENTIALLY THE CHEAPEST ELECTRICITY IN THE WORLD.
