Chinese Nationalist troops take time off in Quemoy, October 25, for a double celebration. Not?

  • Description

Chinese Nationalist troops take time off in Quemoy, October 25, for a double celebration. Not only was it Restoration Day, the day Formosa was restored tot he Nationalists after the Japanese surrender, it was also the date, nine years ago, of a Communist landing on Quemoy.

The Communists threw in 20,000 men in an all-out attempt to take the island. The entire landing party was either killed or captured.

To-day, under present alternate day shelling from the mainland conditions, Quemoy is not much of a place to celebrate.

All the shops, however, were open, flags were hung out and soldiers made up los shopping time.

In Quemoy, same day, was Roger Garreau, former French Ambassador to Russia and personal friend of de Gaulle. In Formosa area at the invitation of the Nationalist Government, he is seen on film with Father Joseph Druette, the only Catholic priest and only foreign civilian resident on Quemoy.
