Background: This is the Tactical Operations Center of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade located in the Iron Triangle area of South Vietnam. Their mission during this recent search and destroy operation was to act as a blocking force in an effort to seal off a Viet Cong unit operating in the area.
The unit comes under enemy sniper fire and mortar crews quickly respond by directing mortar rounds at the enemy position. The mortar rounds fall on target, and a patrol moves up under fire to secure the area. One U. S. soldier is wounded during the advance, but crawls to cover under his own power.
Arriving at the objective, the patrol finds that the barrage of mortar fire has routed the Viet Cong from the area. Several bunkers, tunnel complexes and huts are discovered and are thoroughly searched by the U. S. soldiers.
Confident that the underground facilities are empty the patrol prepares charges and blows up the bunkers and tunnels to prevent their further use by the enemy against allied operations in the area.
