  • Description

One of the largest prisons in South Vietnam is located on Con Son Island, south of Saigon in the China Sea.

Supply links by the South Vietnamese Air Force are the only contacts the prisoners have with the mainland -- some 150 miles away.

Con Son's main task is to rehabilitate political prisoners. Those who show a reformed attitude are allowed outside the compound to fish or work in the village, but the hard-core prisoners are never allowed outside the jail compound.

Last year, Con Son made headlines following allegations the some prisoners were locked up in caged pits which were dubbed "tiger cages". The South Vietnam Government denied the charges, but promised to look into conditions at the island jail.
