• Short Summary

The people of the Seychelles have put the Democratic party back in office. The poll?

  • Description

The people of the Seychelles have put the Democratic party back in office. The poll was held on Thursday (25 April) to elect fifteen members to the Legislative Assembly. The two main parties -- the Democratic Party and the People's United Party -- put up fifteen candidates each. The election was a triumph for the Democrats, winning all but two of the 15 seats.

It was the third successive election victory in the British territory for the Democrats, led by 35 year old James Manchem.

Both parties fought the election on the issue of independence and voting was heavy.

Mr. Manchem will leave for London shortly for talks with British leaders on the constitution to make the Seychelles independent within one year. The talks will also include the issue of Soviet naval presence in the Indian Ocean and the likelihood of the Seychelles being used for as a base for them.
