Background: June 26 in Tananarive's Mahamasina Stadium, Premier Tsiranana and France's Secretary of State of the Community, M. Foyer, read out - in Madagascar and French - the official proclamation of Madagascar's independence.
Tsiranana spoke of Madagascar's gratitude for past French aid, and of continuing friendship within the French Community.
The audience: a jubilant crowd of 100,000. Background effects: the solemn firing of cannon salutes every 30 minutes during the ceremony. In front of Tsiranana was the sacred Vatomasina stone, where kings of the old Madagascar monarchy were consecrated.
After a message from General de Gaulle, the army paraded round the stadium with its new independence flag. There were earlier speeches, too, - at the Premier's official residence, overlooking the capital.
