TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: QUESTION: "Did you get a trial at all?"

    FECTEAU: "I did, yes."

QUESTION: "How long? What kind of trial was it? Did you have a lawyer?"

FECTEAU: "I did have a lawyer, yes."

QUESTION: "Why did you smile, Mr. Fecteau?"

FECTEAU: "Well, he made one statement during the trial. He said something about: 'I have been educated in the schools of American, and therefore I know nothing.' It was a very short statement and I saw no point in having a lawyer."

QUESTION. "How long did it take them to get a verdict?"

FECTEAU: "One day....One hour, I suppose."

QUESTION: "What was a day like there? How did you spend a day, say after day for 19 years?"

FECTEAU: "Reading and walking in the cell, one hour outside. The same thing, day after day."

QUESTION: "You said "writing" in the cell?"

    FECTEAU: "Walking."

QUESTION: "Was it like an American cell?"

FECTEAU: "No, because there are no bars....No bars. Just cell walls and a door with a peek-hole in it. That's covered. And the window is covered half-way up so you can't look out the window."

QUESTION: "Was there any point at which you gave up hope of getting out of there?"

FECTEAU: "I never gave up hop, no."

Background: After 19 years in jail in the Chinese People's Republic, the American Richard Fecteau--convicted as a spy by the Chinese--described his experiences to newsmen yesterday (Wednesday). He was one of two American prisoners released by the Chinese earlier this week.

Fecteau was sentenced to 20 years in jail after his aircraft was shot down by the Chinese in 1952. Newsmen asked him about his trial and the eight or nine years he spent in solitary confinement:
