Background: Motorcycling -- and South African Jon Ekerold rode to victory on a Yamaha in the three-fifty c.c. event at the third world championship grand prix in Hockenheim, West Germany. Ekerold's win, on Sunday (6 May) gave him the lead in the three-fifty c.c. series. The South African won the race with an average speed of one hundred and eight-point-one miles per hour.

SYNOPSIS: Among the riders lined up at the grid for the start of the race....
South Africa's Kork Ballington - who just won the two-fifty c.c. race...

West Germany's Anton Mang who eventually came second in this competition...

And the winner -- number 4 - South Africa's Jon Ekerold. Crowds packed the grandstands at the Hockenheim circuit.

It was early on in the race when Ekerold grabbed the lead with number twenty-one-- West German Anton Mang -- following close behind on his Kawasaki. With the other riders in pursuit, Ekerold and Mang stayed neck and neck for most of the nineteen laps.

Spectators in the grandstand cheered as Mang did his best to close in on Ekerold around the bends. Ekerold around the bends. Ekerold finished the race with thirty-three points -- commanding the lead in the three-fifty c.c. class, while Mang finished with twenty-two points -- placing him third in the ratings.

Number twenty, Ernst Fagerer, crashed his Yamaha and was taken away in an ambulance.

After forty-four minutes and twenty-seven-point-three seconds, Ekerold crossed the finished line and the chequered flag came down.

Photographers crowded the winner's circle as Jon Ekerold accepted the laurels and trophy - now the leader of the three-fifty c.c. series.
