Background: TWO FUEL STORAGE TANKS BLEW UP IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, MAY 10. THE EXPLOSION TOUCHED OFF A FIRE THAT SENT UP A HUGE COLUMN OF SMOKE VISIBLE FOR 30 MILES.

FIRE BOATS SENT JETS OF FOAM ONTO THE FLAMING FUEL AS IT SPREAD ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE WATER. SEVENTEEN SMALL OIL STORAGE TANKS AND ANOTHER HOLDING 3 MILLION GALLONS STORED NEARBY WERE THE FIREFIGHTERS' MAIN CONCERN; AFTER A TWO-AND-A-HALF HOUR BATTLE, THE FLAMES WERE CONFINED AND THE TANKS WERE SAVED.

IN THE BOSTON SUBURB OF CHARLESTOWN, MAY 10, FIRE IN POTATO SHEDS SPREAD TO A NEARBY DWELLING, THEN ENVELOPED HOMES. FIRE FIGHTERS HURRYING TO THE FIRE WERE HAMPERED BY HOMEGOING TRAFFIC JAMS. THE DELAY CAUSED THE FIRE TO EAT UP A ROW OF A DOZEN HOUSES. IT TOOK TWO HOURS TO BRING IT UNDER CONTROL.
