  • Description

Zaire's national football team took a step nearer representing Africa at the World Cup Finals in Munich next year when they beat Zambia by two goals to nil in Lusaka on Sunday (November 4).

The match before a home crowd of 75,000 was a bitter blow to the Zambians who had beaten Morocco, the third team in the Africa Zone qualifying group by 4 - 0 two weeks ago. Their away win must make the Zaire Leopards the strongest contender to get to the finals.

Zambia began with attacking football, but in the 21st minute Zaire broke away and Adelar Mayanga scored.

Emmanuel Kakoko made it two in the 32nd minute with a brilliant curving shot.

Zambia missed a penalty at the end of the first half when Brighton Sinyangwe sent the ball high over the bar.

The Zaire eleven went into the defensive and although the Zambian had chances to score, the Leopard's defence held to the final whistle.

The Zaire team, who are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, arrived in Lusaka aboard a plane provided by President Mobuto Sese Seko.
