  • Description

A hundred thousand people, celebrating India's 23rd anniversary of independence in New Delhi on Saturday (August 15) heard Prime Minster Mrs. Indira Gandhi call for an end to violence and to the current land-grab movement sweeping the country.

Mrs. Gandhi was speaking during a traditional ceremony at the Red Fort, where the flag of independence was first unfurled in 1947.

In her speech -- which was broadcast to the nation -- Mrs. Gandhi condemned the land-grab movement, which has resulted in thousands of recent arrests, adding that the fair apportionment of land would have to be settled peaceably.

On the foreign front, she urged Britain to think again about proposals to renew arms supplies to South Africa. This kind of support would only strengthen and encourage South Africa's apartheid policies she said.
