    THOUSANDS OF SILENT MINERS TODAY (THURSDAY) ATTENDED SEPARATE FUNERALS OF TWO OF THEIR COMRADES KILLED IN MONDAY'S RIOTING OVER THE THREATENED CLOSURE OF UNECONOMIC PITS IN NORTHERN BELGIUM. STRONG FORCES OF PARATROOPS AND RIOT POLICE WERE ON HAND AND THE FUNERALS WENT OFF QUIETLY.

    TWENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD MINER JAN LATOS WAS BURIED AT ZWARTBERG, SCENE OF THE FIRST CLASHES LAST WEEKEND. TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD VALERE SCLEP WAS BURIED AT NEARBY WATERSCHEI, ANOTHER MINING CENTRE WHERE BOTH MEN WERE KILLED.

    ALL WORK AT MINES AND FACTORIES IN LIMBURG PROVINCE STOPPED THE FUNERALS. THE RITES WERE ATTENDED BY WORKERS' DELEGATIONS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND BY THOUSANDS OF FOREIGN MINERS WHO WORK IN BELGIUM'S CRISIS-STRICKEN COAL INDUSTRY.

    MEANWHILE THE BELGIAN GOVERNMENT TODAY (THURSDAY) AGREED WITH THE EUROPEAN COAL AND STEEL COMMUNITY ON URGENT MEASURES TO ABSORB MINERS MADE REDUNDANT BY THE CLOSURE OF UNECONOMIC PITS IN BELGIUM.
