BLOHM AND VOSS THEREFORE CALL THEIR NEW PIONEER DESIGN, MULTI CARRIER SYSTEM, WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE SO FAR USUAL DESPOKE PRODUCTION IN SHIPBUILDING BY A SORT OF READY-MADE DESIGN. FOUR BASIC TYPES, CARRYING FROM 13,600 TO 22,000 TONS ARE PROPOSED. AS THE HULL IS MADE ONLY OF FLAT, SQUARED AND PARTIALLY CONGRUENT SURFACES, THE LENGTH AND DEADWEIGHT CAPACITY CAN EASILY BE MODIFIED TO SUIT THE REQUIREMENT OF, FOR INSTANCE, BULK CARRIER, GENERAL CARGO, COMBINED OR NOT WITH CONTAINERS, MOTOR CARS, ETC. THE POSSIBILITY TO INSTALL ENGINES OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND TO ADD A BULBOUS BOW PERMITS SURFACE SPEEDS FROM FOURTEEN TO NINETEEN KNOTS. THE ADVANTAGES OR THIS NEW DESIGN LAND NEW ACCOMMODATION SYSTEM, APART FROM MULTIPLE APPLICATION, MAINLY IN LOWER BUILDING COSTS AND A CONSIDERABLY REDUCED BUILDING PERIOD."

    THEY CALL THE PROCESS THE MULTI-CARRIER SYSTEM. SHIPS PRODUCED IN THIS WAY CAN, BY USING THE SAME BASIC COMPONENTS, BE BUILT FOR SUCH USES AS BULK CARRIER, CONTAINER SHIPMENT OR CAR CARRYING. ACCOMMODATION EQUIPMENT IS ALSO PRE-FABRICATED.

    THE SIZES OF THESE SHIPS RANGE FROM 13,600 TONS TO 22,800 TONS. VARIOUS SIZES OF ENGINE CAN ALSO BE FITTED, GIVING SPEEDS OF UP TO 19 KNOTS.
