  • Description

A STRIKE BY WORKERS ON THE PARIS UNDERGROUND TRAIN SYSTEM -- THE METRO -- HAS BROUGHT TRAFFIC CHAOS TO THE CITY.

ABOUT A MILLION PARISIANS USE THE METRO EVERY DAY, AND THE STRIKE HAS FORCED THEM ABOVE GROUND INTO STREETS ALREADY CONGESTED WITH TRAFFIC. BY MID-MORNING THE WIDE BOULEVARDS WERE PACKED WITH VEHICLES INCHING THEIR WAY TOWARDS CAR PARKS AND OFFICE BLOCKS. THE METRO WORKERS HAD CALLED THE 24-HOUR STRIKE IN A BID FOR BETTER PAY AND CONDITIONS.

MANY PARISIANS LEFT THEIR BEDS AT DAWN TO WALK TO WORK. OTHERS TOOK BUSES, BICYCLES OR EMERGENCY ARMY TRUCKS, OR STOPPED PASSING MOTORISTS TO ASK FOR LIFTS. BUT MOST OF THEM SEEMED TO HAVE BROUGHT THEIR OWN CARS.

THE STRIKE WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY EFFECTIVE, ALTHOUGH A FEW DRIVERS IGNORED THE UNION'S STRIKE INSTRUCTIONS. WITHOUT CONDUCTORS, THEY GAVE PASSENGERS FREE RIDES.
