  • Description

THE U.S. EMBASSY IN MANILA WAS ATTACKED ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT BY OVER 1,000 DEMONSTRATORS, WHO PELTED THE BUILDING WITH FIREBOMBS AND ROCKS. RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED TO CONTROL THE MOB, AND MANY ARRESTS WERE MADE.

THE RIOTERS HAD BROKEN AWAY FROM A PEACEFUL RALLY OF 25,000 FILIPINOS IN ONE OF THE MAIN SQUARES ON MANILA, IN PROTEST AGAINST THE POLICIES OF THEIR PRESIDENT, FERDINAND MARCOS. THE MOB WENT ON A RAMPAGE THROUGH THE CITY, SETTING CARS ON FIRE AND SMASHING SHOP WINDOWS, BEFORE FINISHING UP OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY.

OFFICIALS BELIEVE THE ATTACK WAS PROMPTED BY MILITANT LEFT-WING GROUPS, WHO DURING THE EARLIER RALLY HAD BLAMED "AMERICAN IMPERIALISM" FOR THE PHILIPPINE' SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS.

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE UNITED STATES LODGES A STRONG PROTEST WITH THE PHILIPPINES FOREIGN OFFICE, CLAIMING THE BUILDING HAD BEEN LEFT UNGUARDED BY POLICE DESPITE REQUESTS FOR PROTECTION. THIS WAS MET WITH AN OFFICIAL APOLOGY FROM THE FILIPINO GOVERNMENT, AND WITH A DENIAL BY FOREIGN SECRETARY CARLOS ROMULO OF AN AMERICAN CLAIM THAT THE EMBASSY WAS BEING TREATED AS A DEFENCELESS HOSTAGE.

LAST MONTH, SIX PEOPLE DIED AND 400 OTHERS WERE INJURED IN A CLASH BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE OUTSIDE THE PALACE RESIDENCE OF PRESIDENT MARCOS.
