  • Description

BELGIAN BROTHERS ROGER AND ERIC DE VLAEMINCK COMPLETED A FAMILY 'DOUBLE' IN LUXEMBOURG TODAY (SUNDAY) WHEN WINNING THE AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL TITLES RESPECTIVELY IN THE WORLD CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS. THEY OUTPACED ALL RIVALS TO THE GREAT DELIGHT OF 10,000 SPECTATORS. THE BROTHERS ARE BOTH MARKET GARDENERS.

ROGER WAS FIRST TO WIN, SKILFULLY FIGHTING OFF DETERMINED CHALLENGERS BY SWISS AND DUTCH RIDERS TO TAKE THE AMATEUR TITLE. THIS RACE IS NOT SHOWN ON FILM.

THE ELDER BROTHER, ERIC DE VLAEMINCK, HAD AN EASIER TIME IN WINNING THE PROFESSIONAL CROWN. TWENTY-EIGHT CONTESTANTS STARTED, BUT RENATO LONGO, THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, FELL EARLY IN THE RACE. ROLF WOLFSCHOL OF WEST GERMANY TOOK THE LEAD FOR THE FIRST FEW LAPS, WITH DE VLAEMINCK RUNNING SECOND. HOWEVER, TWO PUNCTURES PUT WOLFSCHOL BEHIND BY THE 5TH LAP, AND DE VLAEMINCK RETAINED HIS LEAD FOR THE REST OF THE RACE. WOLFSCHOL STILL MANAGED TO TAKE SECOND PLACE.
