The United States tennis champion, Billie Jean King, retained her open title at Forest Hills in New York on Saturday (September 9), when she downed the young Australian, Kerry Melville, 6-3; 7-5.

Observers said there was never much doubt that the American would retain her title, despite some plucky and consistent play from the forceful Australian.

The only uncertainty came during the second set after gusty wind had put Mrs. King off-balance and Miss Melville regained the initiative to win eight successive points.

But at five games all, Mrs. King rallied and she swept to victory to win the first prize of nine-thousand dollars (4-thousand pounds) and a car.

On the same day (September 9) the Rumanian Ilie Nastase downed the American Tom Gorman in a closely fought semi-final match.

The Rumanian lost the first set 4-6, and only just own the second, 7-6 before the American's challenge faded Nastase ran out the winner in the last two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
