    LONDON POLICE TONIGHT (THURSDAY) CHARGED A 22 YEAR OLD MAN, JOHN CAMPBELL MARSON, WITH SHOOTING WITH INTENT TO MURDER, FOLLOWING A GUN-BATTLE WITH POLICE IN THE SUBURB OF KENSINGTON, LAST NIGHT.

    THE INCIDENT BEGAN WHEN POLICE GAVE CHASE TO AN ALLEGEDLY STOLEN CAR CONTAINING TWO MEN AND A WOMAN. DURING THE CHASE AT SPEEDS OF 100 MILES AN HOUR (160 KPH). SHOTS WERE FIRED AT A POLICE CAR, AND A 28 YEAR OLD CONSTABLE MICHAEL WHEELHOUSE, WAS WOUNDED IN THE ARM.

    THE CHASE CAME TO AN END WHEN A PASSING MOTORIST RAMMED THE FUGITIVE CAR AND ONE OF THE OCCUPANTS GOT OUT AND RAN DOWN A NEARBY STREET. POLICE REINFORCEMENT RUSHED TO THE AREA PERSUED THE FLEEING MAN WHO WAS EVENTUALLY CORNERED IN A BASEMENT BELOW A STUDENTS CLUB.

    SEVERAL SHOTS WERE FIRED AND DURING THE EXCHANGE ANOTHER POLICEMAN WAS WOUNDED AND A POLICE DOG, NAMED SIMON WHO HAD MORE THAN 100 ARRESTS TO HIS CREDIT, WAS KILLED.

    THE FINAL CAPTURE OF THE GUNMAN WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY A SQUAD OF DETECTIVES WHO RUSHED THE BASEMENT UNDER A PROTECTIVE BARRAGE OF CHAIRS, MATS, BOTTLES AND SNOOKER BALLS HURLED FROM DURROUNDING UPSTAIRS WINDOWS.

    ARMED POLICE WERE SENT TO THE AREA, BUT WERE NOT NEEDED. ONE OF THE WOUNDED POLICEMEN WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE, THE OTHER, CONSTABLE WHEELHOUSE, WAS OPERATED ON TODAY FOR THE REMOVAL OF A BULLET FROM HIS RIGHT ARM.

    (JOHN CAMPBELL MARSON, HAD BEEN SOUGHT BY POLICE THROUGHOUT BRITAIN SINCE HIS ESCAPE FROM LEWES PRISON, IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND, EARLY IN NOVEMBER LAST YEAR.)
