    The Argentine tanker Petromar (10,900 tons) was in collision with the Danish cargo ship Pennsylvania (5,510 tons) on the Parana de las Palmas River, 135 miles upriver from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Feb 19, in pre-dawn fog.

    Petromar continued to blaze fiercely, next day. Blocking the river, it disgorged from its broken hull its cargo of crude petroleum amid engulfing flames. Because of the danger of explosions, rescuers were unable to approach the vessel. Twenty-four members of the ship's complement of 72 were missing, including her Master, the authorities reported, but it was thought some survivors reached safety among the thickly wooden banks of the river.

    The collision, sparked off a series of explosions in the tanker and ripped a giant hole in the bows of the Danish cargo ship. After the collision, Pennsylvania was beached for fear of sinking. One of her men was missing - the First Officer - feared blown overboard from the bridge by the force of the explosion in the other ship.

    Later, with emergency repairs, Pennsylvania was reflected and limped downstream to Buenos Aires with her flag at half-mast. While in dock, Feb 1, fire broke out in one of her holds. in the gashed bow. But City firemen quickly had it under control after discharging part of the cargo from the forward hold.
