  • Description

THE WORLD'S LARGEST TRANSPORT PLANE, DESTINED TO BECOME A 720 SEAT AIRLINER WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS, LANDED AT LE BOURGET AIRFIELD, IN PARIS, TODAY (MONDAY) AFTER A NON-STOP FIVE HOURS AND FIVE MINUTES FLIGHT FROM MOSCOW. IT IS THE ANTONOV-22, THE LATEST BRAIN-CHILD OF SOVIET AIRCRAFT DESIGNER, OLEG ANTONOV, AND AN AIRCRAFT WHICH HE ALMOST DENIED AS HAVING EXISTED ONLY YESTERDAY.

ONLY THIS MORNING, MR. ANTONOV REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT EXISTED. YESTERDAY, IN REPLY TO REPORTERS QUESTIONS, HE SAID: "WHY SHOULD ANYONE WANT TO BUILD SUCH A PLANE".

THE CURIOSITY OF THE AVIATION WORLD WAS FINALLY SATISFIED THIS MORNING WHEN THE AN-22 FLEW INTO PARIS FROM MOSCOW. IT CIRCLED THE AIRFIELD TWICE BEFORE TOUCHING DOWN ON ITS CRADLE OF TWELVE WHEELS UNDER THE FUSELAGE, AND THEN, AMID CHEERS FROM EXHIBITION OFFICIALS AND VISITORS, TAXIED TO THE HARD STANDING AREA.

FOR SHEER SIZE, THE AN-22 IS IMPRESSIVE. IT IS 185 FEET (57 METRES) LONG HAS A WING SPAN OF 209 FEET (64.4 METRES); IS POWERED BY FOUR TURBO-PROP ENGINES OF 15,000 HORSEPOWER AND, WEIGHS 250 TONS. EACH ENGINE IS FITTED WITH CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLORS. IT HAS TAKEN FOUR YEARS TO DEVELOP AND BUILD.

AS A TRANSPORT THE AN-22, THE BIGGER SISTER OF THE AN-12 AND THE AN-10 TRANSPORTS, HAS A PAYLOAD OF 80 TONS. AS A PASSENGER VERSION IT WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY 72 PASSENGERS ON TWIN DECKS AND HAVE A RANGE OF 3,125 MILES (5000 KMS) AT A SPEED OF 420 MILES PER HOUR (680 K.P.H). ITS SERVICE ALTITUDE WILL BE 35,000 FEET (11,000 METRES).

THE RUSSIANS STOLE THE LIMELIGHT AT THE DISPLAY YESTERDAY WHEN THEY PUT A MODEL OF THEIR PROJECTED SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT AIRLINER - THE TU-144 - ON DISPLAY. SIMILAR IN GENERAL FORM TO THE ANGLO-FRENCH CONCORDE, BUT IS PLANNED TO GO INTO SERVICE BEFORE THE CONCORDE. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE ENGINES OF THE TU-144 ARE UNDER THE FUSELAGE, NOT THE WINGS AS THE CONCORDE, AND ITS SEATING CAPACITY IS 121 COMPARED WITH THE CONCORDE'S 130 PASSENGERS. THE MODEL OF THE TU-144 IS FIVE FEET LONG.

(THE RUSSIANS ALREADY POSSESS THE WORLD'S LARGEST CIVIL AIRLINER - THE TU-114 TURBO-PROP TRANSPORT. IT CAN CARRY A MAXIMUM OF 220 PASSENGERS. THE AN-22 IS NOT THE LARGEST CIVIL AIRCRAFT EVER BUILT - THE HUGHES 'HERCULES' FLYING BOAT AND THE BRISTOL BRABAZON WERE LARGER, BUT NEITHER EVER ENTERED COMMERCIAL SERVICE.)
