  • Description

PARIS BUS AND UNDERGROUND TRAIN SERVICES CAME TO A HALT AND THOUSANDS OF FACTORY WORKERS WALKED OFF THE JOB FOR THIRTY MINUTES IN A PROTEST AGAINST SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION (OAS) TERRORISM, MARCH 12.

EVERY MAJOR TRADE UNION JOINED IN THE STRIKE CALL SPARKED OFF BY THE OAS OUTRAGE TWO DAYS BEFORE WHEN A TRUCK LOADED WITH EXPLOSIVES BLEW UP IN A PARIS STREET, KILLING THREE PEOPLE AND WOUNDING 47. THE UNIONS ALSO USED THE STRIKE TO PRESS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE POLICE PROTECTION.

DURING THE HALF-HOUR STOPWORK, THOUSANDS OF THE STRIKERS WERE JOINED BY STUDENTS AS THEY MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY IN PROTEST. POLICE STOOD BY, BUT THE MARCHERS LATER DISPERSED WITHOUT INCIDENT.

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS CONDEMNED THE OAS METHODS AS "HITLERIAN". VICTIMS OF THE BLAST, SET OFF BY A TIME FUSE, WERE TWO POLICEMEN AND AN EMPLOYEE OF A SEMINARY WHO WAS COLLECTING MAIL. THREE OF THE MOST SEVERELY INJURED WERE 15-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLGIRLS WAITING FOR A BUS TO TAKE THEM TO CLASSES.

ON THE DAY OF THE STRIKE THE GOVERNMENT BANNED ALL PRIVATE AND CHARTER PLANES FROM FLYING OVER FRANCE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. OFFICIALS FEARED THE OAS MIGHT TRY A SPECTACULAR COUP - SUCH AS A PARACHUTE DROP - TO TRY TO STOP A PEACE SETTLEMENT IN ALGERIA.
