Swimming...and in the Dutch city of Amersfoort on Sunday (5 February), the young American swimmer, Cynthia Woodhead, emerged as a potential medal winner in this year's world championship in West Berlin. On the last day of the international Speedo Meet, Miss Woodhead brilliantly won the 200 metres free-style, bringing her victories at the meeting to three. Twenty two countries took part in the three day meet.

SYNOPSIS: The start of the women's 200 metre fre???tyle on the last day of the event with Cynthia Woodhead powering ahead from the gun in lane four. Thirteen-year-old Miss Woodhead comes from Riverside in California, and is ra??? by observers as a swimmer to watch in the coming year.

A clear victory for Miss Woodhead, and a popular one with the crowd. In the three-day meeting she had won three events, boosting the United States' tally to nine successes.

The start of another closely fought event...the women's 200 metres butterfly. A struggle here between Andrea Pollack of east Germany in lane four and Diane Kutzunal of the United States in lane five.

The East German girl finally took the race, to score the second East German victory of the day. It gave East Germany four wins in the meeting. It was a surprising outcome as the East German swimmers were expected to dominate the meet.

The final of the women's 100 metres backstroke...an event in which Dutch swimmers came into their own. Most of the competition was between Monique Bosga of the Netherlands in lane four, and her fellow countrywoman Enith Brigitha, in lane five.

It was Monique Bosga, however, who finally won the race, giving the Netherlands a double victory in the event. That was because earlier in the day the Dutch swimmer Fred Eefting had won the men's 100 metres backstroke.
