  • Description

Researchers in the United States are teaching chimpanzees the sign language used by deaf people.

Recent studies showed that apes, especially chimpanzees, not only can learn symbol language but show an innate sense of grammar. To them, learning sign language is like a human learning a foreign language.

Researchers hope eventually to teach baby chimps sign language as a primary means of communicating with one another.

A researcher said the chimps' learning process was based on mutual respect and that they should be treated like human children.
