  • Description

With heatwave conditions prevailing and the big belt of smog which has plagued New York for the past week now spreading south and reaching more than one-thousand miles (1,600 Kms) down the eastern seaboard of the United States, yet another problem has arisen.....a power failure.

Even at full strength the generators operated by New York's Consolidated Edison Company can barely supply the electricity soaked up by the city during the summer heatwave.

Last week Consolidated Edison's largest generator "Big Allis", named after its manufacturer Allis-Chalmers, collapsed under the strain. It will remain but of service for at least another three months and New Yorkers have braced themselves for blackouts, but this may never happen. The Tennessee Valley Authority, created to serve the backwoodsman, has come to the rescue and agreed to forward several hundred thousand kilowatts to the nation's largest city.

But with five other New York utility electricity companies announcing power cutbacks New York will continue to suffer, at least until the heatwave is over.
