  • Description

WEST GERMANY IS TO SEND A HOSPITAL SHIP TO SOUTH VIETNAM FOLLOWING REQUESTS FROM THE UNITED STATES FOR MORE ACTIVE SUPPORT IN THE CONFLICT THERE.

AMONG THE SHIPS THAT HAVE BEEN NAMED IS THE THREE THOUSAND TON HOLIDAY SHIP HELGOLAND, AT PRESENT MOORED AT HAMBURG.

WEST GERMAN AUTHORITIES HAVE SAID THE SHIP WOULD SAIL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

IT WOULD BE OPERATED BY THE WEST GERMAN RED CROSS, AND WOULD SERVE THE CIVILIAN POPULATION OF SOUTH VIETNAM. THE SHIP WOULD CARRY ITS OWN STAFF OF DOCTORS AND NURSES.

IN 1964 THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO SEND A HOSPITAL SHIP TO SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT THIS DECISION WAS LATER REVERSED.

THE CONVERSION OF THE 'HELGOLAND' WOULD TAKE LESS THAN TWO DAYS. SHE IS AT PRESENT A LUXURIOUSLY APPOINTED VESSEL WITH SPACIOUS CABIN ACCOMMODATION AND A NUMBER OF LARGE ENTERTAINMENT AREAS. SHE CAN TRAVEL AT NEARLY 20 KNOTS, AND TRAVELS USUALLY BETWEEN HAMBURG AND HELIGOLAND ON EXCURSION RUNS. ON LONG OVERSEAS VOYAGES SHE CAN CARRY UP TO 886 PASSENGERS.
