  • Description

One of the great aviation mysteries in Australia is now solved: The tangled wreckage of an aircraft found high in the Snowy Mountains has been identified as the "Southern Cloud," which disappeared on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne March 21 1931, with a crew of two and six passengers.

The wreckage was in precipitous mountain country halfway between Tumbarumba and Grig-Grig.

The plane has been badly burned, and young trees were growing through the wreckage. The aircraft was almost completely obscured by thick foliage.

Inside what was left of the cabin of the Southern Cloud, the searchers found human bones. Three watches and other personal effects were also found. One watch had stopped at 1.15 p.m.

Officials from the department of civil aviation examined the wreckage and the crash area.

Police and DCA officials removed all portable parts of the wreckage leaving only the frame of the plane lying on the mountainside.

Flashback to 1929: Southern Cloud at Brisbane Airport and in fight.

Southern Cloud was one of five similar aircraft owned by Australian National Airways, founded by two of Australia's most famous aviators, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and C.T. (Charles) Ulm. This flashback is of the ill-fated plane, on a flight from Sydney to Brisbane. Southern Cloud was a three-engined Avro Fokker airliner. Built in England. On her last journey she left Sydney early morning for a six-hour flight to Melbourne. Fierce storms blew up in her path. And Southern Cloud vanished.
