  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF RHODESIA VOTED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN THE REFERENDUM TO DETERMINE SUPPORT FOR NEGOTIATIONS TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE UNDER THE PRESENT CONSTITUTION. THE RESULT OF THE POLL GAVE MR. IAN SMITH, THE PRIME MINISTER, A CLEAR VICTORY, WITH JUST OVER 58,000 VOTES. THERE WERE 6,096 VOTES AGAINST, AND 944 SPOILED BALLOT PAPERS.

HOWEVER, THE POLL WAS LOW - ONLY 61.7 OF THOSE ON THE ELECTORAL ROLLS CAST THEIR VOTES. THE AFRICANS AND ASIANS BOYCOTTED THE REFERENDUM ALMOST UNANIMOUSLY.

VOTING WAS QUIET THROUGHOUT THE DAY. IN SALISBURY, MR. SMITH JOINED AN EARLY QUEUE TO CAST HIS VOTE. IN THE WILLOWDALE CONSTITUENCY THERE WAS LITTLE ACTIVITY AT THE POLLING STATIONS, WHERE ONLY 26 PER CENT OF THE ELECTORATE TURNED OUT. HIGHFIELD, ONE OF THE AFRICAN TOWNSHIPS, IS IN WILLOWDALE..
