  • Description

PRINCESS BEATRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS, AND HER GERMAN FIANCE, CLAUS VON AMSBERG, TODAY (SATURDAY) WENT THROUGH THE FIRST BIG TEST OF THEIR POPULARITY ON THEIR FIRST VISIT TO AMSTERDAM. PEOPLE OF THE CITY GAVE THEM A COOL BUT NOT HOSTILE RECEPTION.

FLAGS DECORATED MANY BUILDINGS IN THE CITY TO MARK THE OCCASION, BUT VERY FEW PRIVATE HOMES CARRIED BUNTING OR THE DUTCH TRI-COLOUR.

THERE WERE NO LARGE CROWDS TO GREET THEM AND WHEN THE PRINCESS AND HERR VON AMSBERG TOURED THE AMSTERDAM CANALS BY BOAT, THEY PASSED MANY ANTI-NAZI LEAFLETS FLOATING ON THE WATER.

ONLY A FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE WAITED OUTSIDE THE AMSTERDAM TOWN HALL WHERE THE PRINCESS AND HER FIANCE WENT TO BE RECEIVED BY THE MAYOR, MR. VAN HALL, AND ONLY NINETEEN OF THE THIRTY NINE MEMBERS OF THE TOWN COUNCIL ATTENDED THE RECEPTION. ABSENT WERE COMMUNIST MEMBERS, AND SOME LIBERALS AND CATHOLICS.

MANY DUTCH PEOPLE HAVE OPPOSED THE ENGAGEMENT BECAUSE PRINCESS BEATRIX'S HUSBAND-TO-BE IS A GERMAN. AMSTERDAM'S LARGE JEWISH POPULATION WAS DECIMATED DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
