  • Description

In September, 1967, Combined Mobile Improvement Teams were established in the II Corps area of South Vietnam's central highlands.

These teams were set up to go to the various hamlets and villages in several provinces making up the Corps area, to train villagers, primarily Montagnards, in the art of self defense of their homes.

In Darlac Province, some 150 miles north of Saigon, Team #9, commanded by Army Lieutenant Robert L. Berg, is working with four companies of Montagnard troops around Lac Thien.

The mission of the team is to move from hamlet to hamlet in the province giving a two week training course to each company of Vietnamese and Montagnard Regional Forces in the area. The Regional Forces are military company size units which stay in their own province unlike the regular South Vietnamese Army units which can be stationed anywhere in the country.

The first four days of the course are devoted to the proper use of small unit arms such as the carbine, automatic rifle, 30-caliber machine guns, M-1 rifle and the M-79 grenade launcher. We see some of the Regional Force soldiers on the rifle range firing the carbine.

The remainder of the two week course is spent teaching company and squad tactics, along with map reading, using a compass, radio procedures and ambush and counter ambush techniques.

The final instruction is a combat operation using the skills the soldiers have learned from the American instructors in the two week period. This will be the final score of the course.....remaining alert and alive.

This package contains two film releases from the Department of Defense: 67 feet of 16 mm color composite print of former North Vietnamese learn peaceful trades in "open arms" camp; and 90 feet of silent 16 mm processed color film of army teams training Montagnards.
