  • Description

President Seyni Kountche of Niger and President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo have strongly condemned foreign interference in Angola. The two leaders made their attack in a communique issued at the end of an official visit to Niger this week (27 to 29 December) by President Eyadema.

They said they deplored the intervention in Angola of foreign powers, including South Africa, and believed that by ???ming the warring factions they were encouraging and inflaming a fratricidal struggle.

The two presidents also called on all sides in the Angolan dispute to take part in negotiations for peace and said they hoped the forthcoming summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity would call on the Angolans to find a peaceful solution to their differences.

SYNOPSIS: Niger's President Seyni Kountche was at Niamey airport to welcome Togo's President Gnassingbe Eyadema who arrived in Niger on Saturday for a two day visit.

The two leaders held a series of talks during the visit. Just before President Eyadema left for home, they issued a joint communique condemning foreign interference in Angola.

Their statement accused foreign powers, including South Africa, of arming the warring factions in Angola and claimed that in doing so they were encouraging a fratricidal struggle.

They also called on all sides fighting in Angola to come to the conference table for peace talks. They hoped the forthcoming summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity would help Angola towards peace.
