    The defeated challenger to the World Chess title, Russian defector Victor Korchnoi, has been in Hong Kong to play in an exhibition match amid continuing controversy over the outcome of the long tournament in Baguio City in the Philippines.

    SYNOPSIS: Korchnoi has not accepted his defeated by the Russian Grand Chess Master Anatoly Karpov. Korchnoi claims that the crucial final clash which gave Karpov victory was played under intolerable conditions - and that the Soviet group broke the terms of a contract in having a psychologist present in the audience during the match. Korchnoi resigned from the match and refused to sign papers agreeing to the result and now the Swiss Federation in demanding a reply.

    The Philippines organiser of the championship has rejected this demand. Through the debate continues, this was put aside for this display tournament when Korchnoi took on 40 of Hong Kong's best chess players.

    The 47-year-old grandmaster played white in all the games and walked briskly from board to board, making his moves as his opponents pondered over the games. The exhibition tournament lasted four and a half hours. Korchnoi despatched the first of his challengers after just 90 minutes. Finally, 39 players found Korchnoi's talent just too much to beat. Only one player, a business executive Dr. Alfred Gasser, held his own against the Russian and held him to a draw.
