  • Description

This year is the United Nations' International Children's Year, and as part of the activities organised to commemorate it, there has been an international competition of children's art held in Portugal.

SYNOPSIS: Entries came from dozens of countries, and the winning exhibits were displayed in the Estoril Casino. A special treat for the entrants was the presence of Princess Grace of Monaco to distribute the prizes.

Princess Grace was visiting Portugal for the day. It was to see the inauguration of the Portuguese branch of the World Association of the Friends of Children. Princess Grace is the founder of the movement.

Two of the winners in different classes were Nico Van Riet aged 13 from Holland and Beata Kreminska, aged eight, from Poland. And for Princess Grace there was a reminder of her visit. United Nations officials say that 118 countries have already declared their intention of supporting the United Nation's efforts to improve child welfare in 1979.
