Background: THE UNITED STATES SENT A CHIMPANZEE CALLED ENOS INTO ORBIT TWICE ROUND THE EARTH, Nov 29, AND RECOVERED THE ANIMAL - AND THE "MERCURY" CAPSULE IN WHICH IT TRAVELLED - FROM THE SEA ABOUT 500 MILES FROM BERMUDA. AFTER A TWO-AND-A-HALF HOUR DELAY CAUSED BY TECHNICAL TROUBLE, THE "MERCURY" CAPSULE, MOUNTED ON A 125-TON "ATLAS" ROCKET, LEFT THE LAUNCHING PAD AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, WITH A MIGHTY ROAR.

IT SOARED INTO THE SKY; AND WENT INTO ORBIT A FEW MINUTES LATER, ENOS WAS REPORTED TO HAVE FUNCTIONED NORMALLY, AND IN RESPONSE TO ELECTRICAL IMPULSES IN HIS FOOT, PULLED LEVERS IN THE SPACECRAFT. HIS EFFORTS WERE REWARDED WITH BANANA-FLAVOURED PELLETS.

THE SPACE FLIGHT WAS ONLY A PARTIAL SUCCESS, HOWEVER, FOR THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION HOPED THE CAPSULE WOULD MAKE THREE CIRCUITS OF THE EARTH. IT WAS DECIDED TO HALT THE JOURNEY AFTER TWO CIRCUITS BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE HEAT IN THE CAPSULE, CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL DEFECT. THE CAPSULE PLUNGED INTO THE SEA THREE HOURS AND TWENTY MINUTES AFTER THE TAKE-OFF. ENOS APPEARED TO BE NORMAL.

ENOS' FLIGHT WAS A PRELUDE TO THE FIRST AMERICAN ATTEMPT TO PUT A MAN INTO ORBIT (EXPECTED IN A FEW WEEKS' TIME). COLONEL JOHN GLENN, OF THE U.S. MARINES, HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO MAKE THE ATTEMPT. SO FAR, FOUR MEN HAVE BEEN IN SPACE: YURI GAGARIN AND GHERMAN TITOV (U.S.S.R.) AND ALAN B. SHEPPARD AND VIRGIL GRISSOM (U.S.).
