    The crucial issue of East-West relations was the opening item on the agenda when the Nato Ministerial Council began a new session in The Hague on Wednesday (30 May). Representatives from the fifteen member countries attended, including the United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cyrus Vance.

    SYNOPSIS: The new British Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, arrives, with NATO Secretary General. Dr. Joseph luns. Lord Carrington was to make a key speech at the opening ceremony. In it, he pledged Britain's total commitment to the alliance. He pointed out that the new British government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had set strong defence as one of its main priorities. Britain had already promised to boost its contribution to NATO, and to do whatever was needed to improve her overall security.

    NATO Supreme Commander, General Alexander Haig. At this two-day bi-annual conference, the delegates were also going to take stock of the Atlantic Pact's preparedness against aggression. Reuters news agency said they were also expected to support the new Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) between the United States and the Soviet Union. The treaty is due to be signed by President Carter and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev in Vienna in mid-june. Mr. Vance arrives with the United States delegation. He was scheduled to brief the Ministers on his recent talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on negotiations covering autonomy for the Gaza Strip and West Bank of the River Jordan.

    In their studies of world strategic affairs, the Ministers were considered likely to touch on the durable dispute between two members -- Greece and Turkey -- over Cyprus, on the alliance's southern flank.
