  • Description

THE AUSTRALIA-EUROPE CONTAINERSHIP CONSORTIUM HAS TRANSFERRED ITS OPERATIONS FROM LONDON'S TILBURY DOCKS TO ANTWERP BECAUSE BRITISH DOCKERS REFUSE TO HANDLE CONTAINER SHIPS.

THE MOVE TO BELGIUM IS SUBJECT TO AGREEMENT BY THE ANTWERP DOCKERS. FOR NINE MONTHS NOW CONTAINER TRAFFIC HAS BEEN ROUTED THROUGH ROTTERDAM AND ANTWERP AND THERE IS STILL NO SIGN THAT THE BRITISH DOCKERS WILL LIFT THEIR BAN ON THE NEW 3-MILLION EUROPEAN TERMINAL AT TILBURY. THE DISPUTE IS ROOTED IN PAY DEALS FOR THE DOCKERS HAUNTED BY FEARS OF REDUNDANCY THEY THINK THE CONTAINER HANDLING TECHNIQUES WILL BRING.

MEANWHILE AN OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN FOR THE ANTWERP PORT AUTHORITIES SAID YESTERDAY (THURSDAY 27 NOV) THAT THE SWITCH CAME AS A WELCOME SURPRISE. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT ANTWERP HAS THE MOST MODERN CONTAINER FACILITIES IN EUROPE.

MOREOVER ITS DOCKERS HAD NOT STRUCK FOR 15 YEARS, HE ADDED. THE PORT HAS SIX CONTAINER GANTRIES IN CHURCHILL BASIN, WHICH LIES SOME DISTANCE DOWN THE RIVER SCHELDT FROM THE CITY CENTRE. THE LARGEST CAN HANDLE CONTAINERS OF UP TO 53 TONS AND ALL ARE BIG ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE CONSORTIUM'S 40-TONS LOADS.
