  • Description

Choked with ice from the present record cold spell, the Hudson River Jan 30 closely resembled Antarctica as icebreakers fought to free tugs and merchant shipping caught fast in ice up to eighteen inches thick.

Commercial traffic on the river was almost at a standstill as eastern New York experienced its worst cold spell in more than 40 years.

The widespread 'deep freeze' began Jan 18, when arctic air streams moved across the Canadian border, resulting in sub-zero temperatures. Its effect has been felt as far south as Georgia and Texas.
