    Frelimo (Mozambique Liberation Fornt) leaders, who fought a 10-year war to free their country from portuguese colonialism, arrived in Lourenco Marques on Monday (September 16th) to help form a transitional Government which will lead Mozambique to independence next June. The arrival of the Frelimo delegation, headed by Mr. Joachim Chissano, was remarkable subdued and characterised mostly by strict security at the airport. The airport tarmac was guarded by bout two dozen Frelimo bush fighters, armed with machine guns and Russian-style rifles.

    The emphasis on tight security was not surprising as the situation was still tense in Lourenco Marques after recent riots and looting in at least 80 deaths and widespread damage to property.

    The Frelimo leaders did not attend a news conference given by the Portuguese authorities after their arrival.

    SYNOPSIS: The situation in Lourenco Marques was still tense after the recent riots as the capital of Mozambique prepared for the arrival of the Frelimo (Mozambique Liberation Fornt) leaders who would talke part in the new transitional Government of the country.

    Portuguese troops patrolled the streets as anxious Portuguese settlers whose homes and shops had been looted during the riots demonstrated outside the gates of the military Headquarters in Lourenco Marques. They demanded permission to leave the country.

    Strict security precautions were in force at the airport before the arrival of the Frelimo delegation. Frelimo guards patrolled the tarmac.

    The arrival of the Frelimo delegation was announced by the Portuguese authorities in the Governor's Palace.

    The arrival of the Frelimo leaders, headed by Mr. Joachim Chissano, marked the end of Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique. Frelimo will dominate the new transitional Government of Mozambique, appointing the Prime Minister and six other Cabinet Ministers. It is expected that Mr. Chissano will be the Prime Minister of the transitional Government.
