  • Description

PLAY BEGAN THIS MORNING (SATURDAY) IN THE SECOND CRICKET MATCH BETWEEN ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA AT LORDS. TWO EARLIER DAYS OF PLAY HAD BEEN WASHED OUT BY HEAVY RAIN THAT WRECKED HAVOC WITH SPORTING FIXTURES IN SOUTH-EAST ENGLAND.

ENGLAND WON THE TOSS AND DEXTER, THE ENGLISH CAPTAIN SENT THE AUSTRALIANS INTO BAT ON A WICKET THAT AT FIRST SEEMED TO FAVOUR THE BATSMAN. HOWEVER DEXTER'S GAMBLE PAID OFF AND DETERMINED BOWLING BY THE ENGLISH SIDE SOON HAD THE VISITORS IN TROUBLE. TRUEMAN, ONE OF THE BRIGHTEST CHARACTERS IN ALL ENGLISH CRICKET - SMARTING UNDER REPEATED ADVERSE CRITICISM IN DAILY NEWSPAPERS FOLLOWING AN APPARENT LAPS OF FORM DURING THE FIRST TEST - PUT ON ONE OF HIS MOST SKILFULL PERFORMANCES TAKING FIVE WICKETS FOR FORTY-EIGHT. SUCCESS CAME EARLY FOR WHEN, IN THE THIRD OVER OF THE MORNING HE BOWLED ONE THAT SEEMED A LITTLE ON THE SHORT SIDE. AUSTRALIA'S OPENER LAWRY, FEELING THE BALL WAS RISING, LEFT IT ALONE - AND WAS SOON WALKING BACK TO THE PAVILION, HIS LEFT-HAND LEG STUMP KNOCKED BACKWARDS.

THE ONLY OF THE EARLY AUSTRALIAN BATSMEN TO MATCH THE ENGLISH ATTACK APPEARED TO BE THE YOUNG REDPATH WHO, PLAYING IN HIS SECOND TEST, CAME IN AS OPENER WITH LAWRY AND SAW LAWRY, O'NEILL, BURGE AND BOTH DISMISSES BEFORE HE FINALLY FELL VICTIM TO THE BOWLING OF COLDWELL AND WAS CAUGHT BRILLIANTLY AT SQUARE LEG BY PARFITT.

AUSTRALIA LOST THEIR FIRST SIX WICKETS FOR ONLY EIGHTY-EIGHT RUNS. A GOOD INNINGS BY THE LEFT-HANDER VEIVERS REDEEMED THE SITUATION. HE MADE A COURAGEOUS FIFTY FOUR RUNS - HIS HIGHEST SCORE IN TEST CRICKET. AUSTRALIA HOWEVER WERE EVENTUALLY DISMISSED FOR A HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTY-SIX.

ENGLAND CAME INTO BAT FOR AN HOUR BEFORE THE CLOSE OF THE DAY'S PLAY AND IN THAT TIME SCORED TWENTY-SIX RUNS FOR THE LOSS OF ONE WICKET - THAT OF CAPTAIN TED DEXTER TO THE SECOND BALL OF THE INNINGS.

WITH ONLY TWO DAYS OF PLAY LEFT BOTH TEAMS FACE A DIFFICULT TASK IF A DRAW IS TO BE AVOIDED. HOWEVER, DESPITE THE LOSS OF THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF PLAY THE TASK IS NOT INSURMOUNTABLE: AS RECENTLY AS THE 1930'S THREE-DAY TESTS WERE A REGULAR FEATURE OF THE GAME.
