    Yugoslav President Josip Tito arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Thursday (8 February) for the start of a four-day official visit. He was expected to discuss with Syrian officials the Arab-Israeli conflict, and moves by Syria and Iraq to merge their tow countries.

    SYNOPSIS: President Tito arrived at Damascus on the third stage of his two-week tour of the Middle East, after visit to Kuwait and Iraq. President Tito's Middle East tour has been described by the Yugoslav Communist Party Newspaper Borba as underlining the need for comprehensive, durable and just solution in the Middle East.

    President Tito was met by Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. A topic in their talks was to be latest moves by Syria and Iraq to build one united country. Only the week before, Syria and Iraq had concluded a mutual defence pact, and announced the merger of their foreign, defence and information ministries.

    President Tito wants Arab support for a moderate line at next September's Summit of non-Aligned countries, after having expressed concern over growing rifts in the movement.
