    THE INFANT SON OF THE NIGERIAN DEPUTY-HIGH COMMISSIONER IN LONDON WAS AMONG THREE PEOPLE WHO DIED EARLY THIS MORNING WHEN FIRE SWEPT THROUGH THE OFFICIAL'S RESIDENCE IN LONDON.

    THOSE WHO DIED WERE ADIJATU BALEWA, AGED ONE, HIS FIVE-YEAR-OLD BROTHER IBRAHIM, AND THEIR NANNY, RISI ADEGOKE, AGED 17. FIREMEN APPLIED ARTIFICIAL RESUSCITATION. BUT ALL THREE WERE DEAD ON ARRIVAL AT ST. GEORGE'S HOSPITAL.

    THE BUILDING WAS OCCUPIED BY MR. BALARABE BALEWA, HIS WIFE, THEIR FOUR CHILDREN AND THE NANNY. MR. AND MRS. BALEWA, AND THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS, AISHATU, AGED TEN, AND ZAINAS, AGED THREE.

    IT TOOK FIREMEN AN HOUR TO BRING THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL, AND A DOZEN FIRE APPLIANCES ATTENDED.

    MR. AND MRS. BALEWA WERE RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL AFTER RECEIVING TREATMENT FOR SHOCK. THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS WERE DETAINED WITH MINOR BURNS.

    THE FIRE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE BUILDING, BLOCKING OFF THE TWO STOREYS. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED, BUT POLICE SAY THERE ARE NO SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.
