  • Description

EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT GAMAL ABDEL NASSER AND ETHIOPIAN EMPEROR HAILIE SELASSIE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) INAUGURATED A NEW COPTIC CATHEDRAL IN CAIRO. THE CATHEDRAL, REPUTED TO BE THE BIGGEST IN AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST, WAS DEDICATED TO ST. MARK, THE FIRST ARCHBISHOP OF ALEXANDRIA, WHO WAS MARTYRED IN EGYPT 19 CENTURIES AGO.

DURING THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY, PRESIDENT NASSER AND EMPEROR SELASSIE SAT, SIDE BY SIDE, IN A HUGE ORIENTAL MARQUEE AS ROBED CHURCH DIGNITARIES EXPRESSED HOPED THAT THE OCCASION WOULD STRENGTHEN HUMAN LINKS BETWEEN NATIONS. THEY THEN MOUNTED RED-CARPETED STEPS TO UNVEIL A PLAQUE IN THE MAIN PORCH OF THE CHURCH.

ST. MARK IS REVERED AS THE FOUNDER OF THE COPTIC CHURCH, WHICH FORMS THE NATIONAL CHURCH OF ETHIOPIA AND IS STRONG AMONG CHRISTIANS IN EGYPT. THE RELICS OF THE SAINT, TAKEN TO ITALY BY VENETIAN TRADERS 11 CENTURIES AGO, WERE RETURNED BY POPE PAUL ON MONDAY AND WERE RE-INTERRED IN A CRYPT OF THE CATHEDRAL TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

SINCE 828, THE RELICS HAVE BEEN KEPT IN VENICE, WHICH ADOPTED ST. MARK AS IT'S PATRON SAINT. POPE PAUL RESTORED THE RELICS TO EGYPT AS A GESTURE, DESIGNED TO HELP PAVE THE WAY TOWARDS GREATER UNITY AMONG THE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES OF EGYPT.

THE INAUGURATION OF THE HIGH-DOOMED CATHEDRAL WAS WATCHED BY ABOUT 3,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING EGYPTIAN CABINET MINISTERS AND FOREIGN DIPLOMATS.
