  • Description

THE ANNUAL WATER FESTIVAL - A FESTIVAL OF PURIFICATION THAT HAS BEEN OBSERVED FOR CENTURIES, WAS HELD RECENTLY IN BURMA.

THE BURMESE PEOPLE CONSIDER WETTING EACH OTHER WITH WATER A GOOD OMEN, SO THE REVELLERS, DRESSED IN THEIR BEST ATTIRE, GOT WET FROM HEAD TO FOOT.

THE BURMESE GOVERNMENT MARKED THE OCCASION BY DECLARING FIVE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN SUCCESSION. THE SPRINKLING OF WATER EXPRESSES GOODWILL AND RESPECT TOWARDS THE RECIPIENT AND THERE WAS MUCH FUN AND FROLIC AS SCORES OF PEOPLE ARRIVED FOR THE FESTIVAL IN CARS AND GROUPS - JUST TO GET WET. THIS IS CONSIDERED A FORM OF PURIFICATION FOR THEIR SOULS.

WHILE THIS CEREMONY WAS IN PROGRESS, THE RESERVOIRS OF MALAYA, SINGAPORE AND HONG KONG WERE GRADUALLY DRYING UP. THESE PLACES HAVE HAD NO RAIN FOR SOME MONTHS, AND WATER RATIONING HAS BEEN INTRODUCED.
