    A SERIES OF TORNADOES RIPPED ACROSS CENTRAL NEBRASKA ON SATURDAY NIGHT, KILLING AT LEAST FOUR PEOPLE AND DAMAGING MANY DWELLINGS IN SMALL COMMUNITIES. MOST PEOPLE TOOK REFUGE IN STORM CELLARS OR CAVES. THE FOUR DEATHS OCCURRED IN THE VILLAGE OF PRIMROSE (POPULATION 117), 50 MILES NORTH OF GRAND ISLAND. MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH INJURED THERE.

    FILM SENT FROM NEW YORK TONIGHT VIA THE EARLYBIRD SATELLITE SHOWS SCENES OF DAMAGE IN PRIMROSE, WITH SURVIVORS SEARCHING THROUGH THE RUBBLE.

    ONE OF THE TORNADOES CUT A PATH 300 YARDS (274 METRES) WIDE THROUGH THE VILLAGE, DESTROYING ABOUT 20 HOUSES AND DAMAGING 20 OTHERS. THREE PEOPLE, TWO ELDERLY WOMEN AND THE SON OF ONE OF THEM, WERE KILLED AS THEY FLED FROM A HOUSE TO SEEK SHELTER IN A CAVE.

    A NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL, ONE OF A FAMILY OF NINE, WAS CAUGHT BY THE STORM AS THEIR HOUSE WAS TORN FROM ITS FOUNDATIONS AND WAS THROWN DOWN 100 FT (ABOUT 30 METRES) AWAY. SHE DIED ON THE WAY TO HOSPITAL.

    SHOPKEEPER OLGA PRIMROSE, AFTER WHOSE FAMILY THE VILLAGE IS NAMED, SAID SHE WOULD STAY AND ATTEMPT TO REBUILD. OTHERS SAID THEY HAD ENOUGH OF LIVING IN A TORNADO AREA AND VOWED TO MOVE OUT.

    (THE TORNADOES CAME LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER THOSE THAT KILLED 250 PEOPLE IN AN AREA STRETCHING FROM IOWA TO INDIANA.)
