Basketball....and the Peking International Friendship Men's Invitational Tournament began there on Saturday (5 August). Teams competed in two groups from China, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Rumania, Yugoslavia and North korea. The first of two stages was in round robin fashion.
SYNOPSIS: Before the opening match, all the competing squads, lined up to be greeted by the spectators. Players form Yugoslavia and Rumania exchanged mementoes before taking the court.
The first jump-ball, with Rumania in the all-white strip, playing from left to right. The Rumanians were the more experienced, because their opponents were the Yugoslav National Youth team. The Rumanians used their greater know-how to make swift break-aways, and place a lot of stress on the Yugoslav defensive players. Faced with this tactical knowledge, the Yugoslav early n had to play a more deliberate game, moving the ball around in long inter-passing patterns, and easing themselves towards the basket. While their positioning was nimble, they had to contend with the Rumanian defender massed in force near the basket.
Again the swift break from the Rumanians, and another score. The Yugoslavs were not outclassed; the match was tied thirteen times during the two periods. But the Rumanians had the knack of wresting back the lead.
The match was a stimulating start for the tournament, with the Rumanians finally winning, ninety-six points to ninety-two.
