  • Description

THE AUSTRIAN PEOPLE'S PARTY LED BY AUSTRIA'S CHANCELLOR JOSEF KLAUS, IS FIGHTING TO RETAIN ITS ABSOLUTE MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT IN THE GENERAL ELECTIONS ON SUNDAY (MARCH 1). THE LEADERS OF THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES WERE IN VIENNA ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY FOR THE LAST STAGES OF THE CAMPAIGN.

THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY IS HEADED BY FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER, BRUNO KREISKY, AND CHANCELLOR KALAUS HAS STATED THAT HE WOULD NOT FORM A COALITION WITH THE SOCIALISTS.

THE ELECTION RESULT IS EXPECTED TO BE A CLOSE RACE BETWEEN THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES AND IF NEITHER ATTAIN AN ABSOLUTE MAJORITY THE SMALL RIGHT-WING FREEDOM PARTY MAY HOLD THE BALANCE OF POWER.

DESPITE THE CHANCELLOR'S OPPOSITION TO A COALITION WITH THE SOCIALISTS IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE MOST LIKELY OUTCOME WILL BE A COMBINATION OF THE MAJOR PARTIES.

IN LOCAL ELECTIONS IN CARINTHIA LAST SUNDAY (FEB 22) A SOCIALIST, HANS SIMA, WON THE ELECTION AND ON THE BASIS OF THIS RESULT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO DO RATHER BETTER IN THE GENERAL ELECTION THAN THEY DID IN 1966.

RISING FOOD PRICES AND AGRICULTURAL POLICY ARE MAJOR FACTORS IN THE CAMPAIGN.
