    SENEGAL'S PRESIDENT LEOPOLD-SEDAR SENGHOR AND HIS RULING PROGRESSIVE UNION PARTY HAVE WON A CLEAR MAJORITY IN YESTERDAY'S (SUNDAYS) PRESIDENTIAL AND LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS.ARMED CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS MARRED THE POLL - THE FIRST SINCE THE NATION GAINED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960.

    AT LEAST 11 PEOPLE WERE REPORTED KILLED AND 60 WOUNDED IN THE FIGHTING BEFORE A DUSK-TO -DAWN CURFEW WAS CLAMPED ON THE CITY.GOVERNMENT SOURCES CLAIMED THAT THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE STAGED BY THE BANNED EXTREME LEFT-WING AFRICAN INDEPENDENCE PARTY AND BANDS OF TROUBLE-MAKERS, RATHER THAN THE ONLY LEGAL OPPOSITION, THE AFRICAN REGROUPMENT PARTY.

    PRESIDENT SENGHOR - THE ONLY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE - GOT OVER 900,000 VOTES FROM THE 1,320,000 ELIGIBLE VOTERS.IN THE LEGISLATIVE POLL, THE PROGRESSIVE UNION PARTY WON OVER 800,000 VOTES, AND THE AFRICAN REGROUPMENT PARTY 36,788 VOTES.

    FILMED ARE VOTERS GOING TO THE POLLS AND EARLY RETURNS BEING COUNTED.ALSO SEEN ARE PRESIDENT SENGHOR AND HIS WIFE VOTING, TOGETHER WITH M.LAMINE GUEYE, PRESIDENT OF THE SENEGALESE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

    MEANWHILE, THE SENEGALESE CAPITAL, DAKAR, WITH ITS 350,000 POPULATION, WAS OUTWARDLY CALM TODAY AS TROOPS STOOD GUARD AT STRATEGIC POINTS THROUGHOUT THE CITY.
