Background: Spanish police mourned at the funeral of their former chief, held in a Bilbao church on July 2. Jose Aibar head of the Municipal Police in Bilbao's Baracaldo suburb was shot dead by Basque separatist guerrillas on June 30. The police chief was playing cards in a bar when several youths fired automatic weapons at the players killing Jose Aibar outright and wounding two other men. After the funeral the police held a silent march to protest at the killing. Mr. Aibar, 58, was the 20th victim of political violence in the Basque district this year. The day after the police chief's funeral guerrillas and separatist supporters mourned in their turn at the burial of Francisco Zabaleta killed in the same attack. Mr. Zabaleta, said by police to be a member of the separatist organisation ETA (Basque Homeland and Liberty) was hit in the head and chest during the Aibar shooting. The funeral, held at Unchaurrondo near Bilbao, was attended by a large police contingent mingling with the crowd. After the burial an anti-police demonstration turned into a riot with demonstrators throwing stones and police protected by riot shields firing at the crowd.
